She does not know its provenance but intends to find out. This search takes her to Corsica, Paris, and New York and upends what she knew about her family ties. The story begins, however, describing the friendship between free spirit Alice Eversley and her good friend Tom Stafford in the s. Both Alice and Tom tell their own stories in alternating chapters while Kate learns more about who the woman in the portrait is and how it relates to her tenuous family history.
The story takes unexpected turns and reveals secrets not meant to be unveiled. Through it all, you get an armchair seat in witnessing indulgent and glamorous parties as well as discovering gorgeous locales juxtaposed with wartime drama and great loves.
The language used to describe the scenery and even how the characters interacted with each other is poetic and reflective of the artists it mentions. At times, the story may move along slowly, and I found myself frustrated with some of the characters from keeping their secrets so long, but it adds to the novel and shows the resilience of the characters. While I liked the book, I felt that the epilogue did not go into enough detail and felt too much like an add-on. Plus I didn't feel like we learned that much about Kate's future.
A romance starts brewing for her and then? I wanted more about book report of lost and found happens to her in the future. This beautifully written book absorbed me into its pages from the start. The scenes it invokes are vivid, its characters beautifully drawn. Now that I think about it, it is in some essential way a painting come to life as a novel.
It could almost be the backstory for a series of painted vignettes in the lives of its protagonists, so vivid are the images it invokes. I was sad when it ended, as the romantic in me would have liked more details of the years between the s and the s, but I suppose leaving these out allowed it to remain truer to its form as a painting in words.
The writing in this book is beautiful; it is somehow appropriate that the book itself book report of lost and found beautifully produced, book report of lost and found. Someone did a magnificent copy editing job, and the pages themselves seem part of the book as an artistic endeavor. The author or editor has a slight weakness in use of pronouns, tending to use "I" when it should be "me," but I can forgive these infrequent mistakes in the glories of the prose. Like Grindle's Villa Triste, another superb book with a similar past-and-present pair of stories, this book has not received the attention it so clearly deserves.
I am going to order a bunch of copies and send them to friends, because more people need to know about this author! They will feel the sun on their faces in Corsica, or the shaking of the floors as the SS approaches. and I want to share this with them.
In a word, this book is glorious. This is the fourth Lucy Foley book I have read! I have enjoyed all of them, book report of lost and found, but this one is my favorite. I loved the characters. Foley definitely keeps you guessing!
